Toninho, the pig from Portugal, Vilarandelo
I have written already about Toninho ( Tony ) the little pig a population has bought to give as the premium of Christmas raffle.
The pig is now a big pig loved by almost everybody. Some say that pigs are to be eaten and not to cuddle . Thats the tradition in the rural villages, to make sausages and so on. Solidarity groups of animal protection have offered to take the pig to their sanctuaries, but they refused.
Now the raffle was won by a girl of 26, lover of animals, she has lots of cats at home. But the Carnaval Commitee has bought the pig from her. It is announced in poster in Vilarandelo that the pig will be the King in the Carnival Parade of the city.
Well at least, nobody talks about killing him. They say they will build a good house to resist the winter for him.
What can I say ? It goes against my values to see a animal in circus and so on. Althoug I am not a vegetarian, I say that animals must have their dignity preserved. But it is all for the best, after all, in the winter, people can´t go outside, it rais and sometimes there is snow.
